Neoprene is a brand name developed by a chemical manufacturing company; falling within a family of synthetic rubbers, it's very commonly used to manufacture custom rubber gaskets for a number of industries, based on polychloroprene. This family of rubbers was developed as an oil-resistant alternative to natural rubber products, since many rubber seals and/or rubber gaskets are subject to environments where they may come in direct contact with oils.
